Description

Authentic Italian Stromboli is a beloved dish that has captured the hearts and taste buds of Italian-American cuisine enthusiasts. Originating from the southern regions of Italy, this savory rolled bread is a delightful fusion of flavorful meats, melted cheeses, and aromatic seasonings, all wrapped up in a golden, crispy crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound pizza dough
  • 1/4 cup pizza sauce or marinara
  • 6 slices genoa salami
  • 6 slices capicola or ham
  • 6 slices pepperoni
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded provolone or Italian cheese blend
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven: To 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Prepare Dough: Roll out pizza dough on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle about 10×14 inches.

3. Layer Fillings: Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce (if using) over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Layer salami, capicola (or ham), pepperoni, mozzarella, and provolone evenly over the sauce. Add any optional fillings like red pepper flakes, fresh basil, or banana peppers.

4. Roll the Stromboli: Carefully roll up the dough starting from the longer side, tucking in the sides as you go to keep the fillings inside. Pinch the seam to seal and place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.

5. Egg Wash and Season: Brush the top of the Stromboli with the beaten egg. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning and grated Parmesan cheese.

6. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and the dough is cooked through.

7. Cool and Serve: Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with warm pizza sauce or marinara on the side for dipping.

Notes

Choose a high-quality pizza dough.

Slice the meats thinly.

Avoid overfilling.

Seal the seam tightly.

Use an egg wash.

Let it rest before slicing.
