Description
Crispy Chinese Honey Chicken combines the crunch of fried chicken with a sweet and sticky honey-based sauce, creating a mouthwatering dish.
Ingredients
- 2 pieces boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoon vegetable oil (for batter)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/3 cup honey
- 2 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for heat)
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoon water (for thickening)
Instructions
1. Make the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and white pepper. Add the water, egg, and 2 tablespoon of vegetable oil, then mix until the batter is smooth and lump-free.
2. Coat the Chicken: Gently add the chicken pieces to the batter, ensuring each one is evenly coated.
3. Fry the Chicken: Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F. Carefully drop the battered chicken pieces into the hot oil, frying them in batches until they’re golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes. Remove the fried chicken from the oil and let it drain on paper towels.
4. Prepare the Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, then stir in the cornstarch slurry. Cook the sauce until it thickens, about 1-2 minutes.
5. Toss Chicken in Sauce: In a large bowl, gently toss the fried chicken pieces with the honey sauce until they’re evenly coated.
6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle the Crispy Chinese Honey Chicken with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for a beautiful presentation. Serve this dish hot, alongside steamed rice or noodles.
Notes
For the crispiest results, use a high-heat oil like peanut, vegetable, or canola oil. Frying in small batches helps maintain a consistent oil temperature for even cooking.
