Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 hot dogs

  • 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

1. Insert wooden skewers into the center of each hot dog.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and pepper.

3. In another bowl, combine buttermilk, egg, mustard, and ketchup. Pour into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth.

4. Fold in shredded cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon.

5. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).

6. Dip each hot dog into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, and place in hot oil.

7. Fry for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

8. Drain on paper towels and serve hot with dipping sauces.

Notes

For extra heat, add diced jalapeños to the batter.

Use vegetarian or vegan sausage for a meat-free version.

Make mini corn dogs using smaller hot dogs or cocktail sausages.
