Description

Get ready to indulge in a mouthwatering fusion of savory pork, caramelized onions, and melted cheese – welcome to the world of French Onion Pork Chops! This dish is the ultimate comfort food, blending the rich, onion-y goodness of French onion soup with the tender, juicy texture of pan-seared pork chops.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pieces boneless pork chops (1-inch thick)
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Season the pork chops generously with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the chops for 3-4 minutes per side until they’re golden brown. Remove the chops from the pan and set them aside.
  2. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and sugar, and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized to perfection.
  3. Stir the minced garlic into the caramelized onions and cook for 30 seconds. Sprinkle in the all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Gradually pour in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Stir in the dried thyme and let the sauce simmer for 5 minutes, or until it’s thickened to your desired consistency.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Nestle the seared pork chops back into the skillet, making sure they’re surrounded by the caramelized onions. Top the chops with the shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese.
  6. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pork chops reach an internal temperature of 145°F and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Garnish the French Onion Pork Chops with fresh parsley. Spoon the rich, onion-y sauce over the top of the chops and serve immediately.

Notes

Pair this dish with creamy mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, or a fresh green salad for a complete and satisfying meal.
