Description

Homemade Chicken Shawarma is a delectable Middle Eastern dish that transports your taste buds to the bustling streets of the Levant. With its mouthwatering blend of spices, tender chicken, and creamy yogurt sauce, this recipe is a true culinary journey.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pound chicken thigh fillets, boneless and skinless
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 pieces pita bread
  • 3 cup lettuce, shredded
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tomatoes, sliced

Instructions

1. Combine chicken thighs with garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and spices in a large mixing bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour or overnight.

2. In a small bowl, whisk together yogurt, mayonnaise, Sriracha, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then chill.

3. Preheat grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook marinated chicken for 6-8 minutes per side until cooked through and slightly charred. Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

4. Warm pita bread in the oven or under a broiler. Assemble shawarma by placing sliced chicken on pita, topping with lettuce, red onion, and tomato slices. Drizzle with creamy sauce.

Notes

Feel free to experiment with additional toppings such as pickled turnips, hummus, or French fries. Serve with basmati rice, tabbouleh salad, or falafel for a complete meal.
