- 2 medium onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Cooking spray
Instructions
- Peel the onions and cut off the top. Place the onions cut-side down and slice downward about 3/4 of the way through, making 8-12 cuts around each onion to create petals. Be careful not to slice all the way through.
- Gently spread the onion petals apart to create the blooming effect. Soak the cut onions in ice water for 10 minutes to help them open further, then pat them dry thoroughly.
- In a shallow bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- In another bowl, whisk the egg and buttermilk together.
- In a third bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese.
- Coat each onion in the flour mixture, making sure to get between the petals. Shake off any excess.
- Dip the coated onions in the egg mixture, allowing the excess to drip off.
- Generously coat the onions with the breadcrumb and Parmesan mixture, pressing gently to help it stick between the petals.
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F. Spray the basket with cooking spray.
- Carefully place the coated onions in the air fryer basket, making sure they have enough space to cook evenly. Spray the tops of the onions generously with cooking spray.
- Air fry the onions for 15-18 minutes, flipping and spraying with more oil halfway through, until they’re golden brown and crispy.
