Description
Old-Fashioned Homemade Banana Pudding is a classic dessert that captures the essence of Southern comfort and nostalgia. This recipe allows the natural flavors of ripe bananas, creamy custard, and crisp vanilla wafers to shine.
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 cup whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 box (11 ounce) vanilla wafers
- 4 ripe bananas
Instructions
1. In a saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Slowly pour some of the hot milk mixture into the eggs while whisking to temper them. Pour back into the saucepan and cook for 2 more minutes, stirring constantly.
3. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
4. In a 2-quart serving dish, layer vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and warm custard. Repeat layers, ending with custard on top.
5. Allow to cool slightly, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
For best results, use ripe but firm bananas. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
