Description

Shoyu Chicken is a deliciously tender dish featuring chicken thighs marinated in a flavorful soy sauce-based mix with brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and a dash of spices. This easy-to-make dish is perfect for a weeknight meal, delivering sweet, savory, and slightly spicy flavors. Ideal for serving with rice or your favorite side, Shoyu Chicken brings Hawaiian-inspired flavors to your table in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup soy sauce

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon paprika

  • 8 skinless, boneless chicken thighs

Instructions

  • Prepare Marinade: In a bowl, mix soy sauce, brown sugar, water, onion, garlic, ginger, black pepper, oregano, red pepper flakes, cayenne, and paprika. Stir until the sugar dissolves.

  • Marinate Chicken: Place chicken thighs in a zip-top bag or shallow dish. Pour marinade over the chicken and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight.

  • Cook Chicken: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add marinated chicken thighs and cook for 6–7 minutes per side, until fully cooked and browned.

  • Simmer Sauce: Pour the remaining marinade into the skillet and simmer for 5–7 minutes until the sauce thickens.

  • Serve: Serve chicken with sauce poured over the top, and pair it with rice or your favorite side dish.

Notes

  • For best results, marinate the chicken overnight for maximum flavor.

  • The sauce can be thickened further with a cornstarch slurry if desired.

  • If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper.

  • You can substitute chicken breasts for thighs, but thighs provide a juicier texture.
