Description

Shrimp Sausage Dirty Rice is a classic Cajun dish that combines ground meats, shrimp, rice, and a variety of aromatic spices. The “dirty” in the name refers to the rice’s distinctive brown color, which comes from the browned meat and seasonings. This one-pot wonder is known for its rich, robust flavors and satisfying texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • 12 shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 4 cup cooked rice
  • 2 cup chicken broth
  • 1 1/2 cup mixed onions and bell peppers, chopped
  • 3 tablespoon vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 3 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of oil. Brown the ground beef and sausage until fully cooked. Drain any excess grease if needed and set the cooked meats aside.

2. In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of oil and cook the chopped onions and bell peppers until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

3. Push the vegetables to the side and add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and the flour. Stir constantly over medium heat until it forms a light brown roux, about 3–5 minutes.

4. Stir in the seafood seasoning, oregano, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne (if using). Slowly pour in the chicken broth while stirring to form a flavorful sauce.

5. Add the shrimp to the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes until pink and cooked through.

6. Return the cooked meats to the skillet. Stir in the cooked rice and let everything heat through for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

7. Serve the Shrimp Sausage Dirty Rice hot as a hearty main dish, full of bold Cajun flavors that will delight your taste buds.

Notes

For authentic Shrimp Sausage Dirty Rice, opt for long-grain white rice or Basmati rice. These varieties will hold up well to the flavorful sauce and meats, ensuring a perfect texture in the final dish.
