Description

Smothered Chicken is a beloved Southern comfort food dish that’s as delicious as it is satisfying. This savory, creamy chicken recipe features tender chicken breasts coated in a crispy breading, then smothered in a rich, flavorful gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 slices bacon
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce
  • A few drops of Kitchen Bouquet (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dredge: Combine the flour, breadcrumbs, seasoned salt, black pepper, and all the dry seasonings on a large plate.

2. Cook the Bacon: In a skillet over medium-low heat, cook the bacon until crisp on both sides. Remove, crumble, and set aside, reserving the drippings.

3. Dredge the Chicken: Pound the chicken breasts evenly, then coat them in the dredge mixture.

4. Fry the Chicken: Add the vegetable oil to the bacon drippings and heat over medium. Fry the chicken until golden brown on both sides, then remove and set aside.

5. Make the Gravy: Pour off any excess oil, leaving about 2 tablespoon in the skillet. Add the butter and whisk in the flour to make a roux. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth, half-and-half, and beef bouillon, stirring until the gravy is smooth and thickened.

6. Season the Gravy: Stir in the soy or Worcestershire sauce, and a few drops of Kitchen Bouquet (if using).

7. Combine and Simmer: Return the chicken to the skillet, spoon the gravy over the top, and simmer for 10 minutes until the chicken is tender.

8. Finish and Serve: Top the Smothered Chicken with the crumbled bacon and serve hot, alongside mashed potatoes or fluffy white rice.

Notes

To ensure your Smothered Chicken turns out perfectly every time, opt for boneless, skinless chicken breasts for the best texture and ease of preparation. Cook the bacon until it’s crisp and golden-brown for maximum flavor and texture. Take your time to create a smooth, lump-free gravy by whisking the ingredients together gradually.
